NSW Trains is proposing to slash weekend shifts at the station which is usually manned seven days per week.
On Thursday, the NSW Rail, Tram and Bus union showed The South Coast Register an internal document from NSW Trains, which outlines proposed staffing cuts.
“On weekends we’ll have no assistance for the elderly and disabled, no access to facilities, toilets or the waiting room,” Mr Higgins said.
“Berry is a tourist destination, it’s a busy station on the weekends, we have lots of festivals down here.
“You’re not going to be greeted by a station master anymore who tells what you can do, where to go.
“This government puts the money before the people, I don’t see this as acceptable.”
If passengers wish to find amenities, they’ll need to walk about 500m to the town’s centre.
Mr Higgins promised, under Labor, there would be no changes to staffing at train stations on the South Coast line.
Berry train station operates on a split roster on the weekend.
If the changes are approved, the Bomaderry station manager will oversee operations at Berry station on weekends.
Kiama MP Gareth Ward dismissed Mr Higgins’ statement.
“I am aware that Labor is making misleading claims in relation to weekend staffing arrangements at Berry Station,” Mr Ward said.
“The claims being made by Labor are totally incorrect and deliberately misleading.
“Labor made the same incorrect statements in the lead up to the 2015 state election.
“It’s sad that instead of matching our commitments for our community, Labor has to make it up in order to compete. The community will see through these statements.”
