Mr Comber passed away three weeks ago, after a long battle with cancer. More than 700 people attended his funeral, which showed how loved and respected he was in the Kiama region.
Leaving behind his wife Joan, an optometrist at their practice Comber Optometrist in Centrepoint Arcade, and sons Clayton and Brendon, Mr Comber has been remembered as a “kind and selfless man”.
As Mr Comber’s kindness touched so many people, good friends of Clayton’s have graciously offered to shout a day of coffee in Arthur's name.
Clayton owns a bookstore/ coffee shop with his partner Hannah called Bouquiniste, also located in Centrepoint Arcade, and on Saturday, the community has been invited to stop by and share stories in memory of Mr Comber.
'Have a Coffee on Arthur Day' will also be used as a fundraising event for Story Factory, a not-for-profit creative writing centre for marginalised young people.
In lieu of paying for the coffee, the community has instead been asked to make a gold coin donation to the charity.
Long-time friend of the Comber family, Janelle Matilla said hundreds of people were expected to drop by in honour of Mr Comber.
“My lasting memory of Arthur is of a kind, gentle man who always had a smile on his face and who was always interested in the welfare of everyone other than himself,” she said.
“Arthur was an extremely selfless and giving man, who did so much for the Kiama community. “
Mr Comber was known for his genoristy. Over the years he hosted Christmas lunches for his senior clients and raised thousands of dollars for charity through his annual Christmas light displays.
The community has been invited to visit the cafe from 8am, Saturday January 19 to celebrate Have a Coffee on Arthur Day. For more information about Story Factorym visit https://www.storyfactory.org.au.
