This week we were reminded of the amazing international network offered by Rotary. President Tonia welcomed Irene Kotze and Gerard Sieberhagen from the first Rotary e-Club of South Africa and also on the same night Leonie and Mike Kiely from the Rotary Club of Kirriemuir in Angus, Scotland.
Irene is the President and Gerald is Secretary of the first e-Club in South Africa which boasts around 40 members and focus on literacy for African children. Most members live in the Durban area of South Africa but there are members all over the world from the Midlands, Greece, Johannesburg and even 3 members in Australia including Charmaine Wheatley, previously a member of Kiama Rotary Club, who shares her time between the Sunshine Coast and Kiama and visits us often.
Mike Kiely spoke about the Rotary Club of Kirriemuir in Scotland, the birth-place of James Matthew Barrie – J.M. Barrie - of Peter Pan fame. Their Club also has 40 members and Mike is an Assistant District Governor. His club has partnered with the Rotary Club of Himalayan Gurkhas in Nepal to rebuild schools badly affected by the earthquake of 2015.
Gerald, Irene, Michael and Leonie met at the Kiama Rotary Clube meeting and were enroute to the International Fellowship of Cricket Loving Rotarians (IFCR) who are meeting in Melbourne at the end of the month.
Meanwhile a group of Rotarians from Kiama and surrounds, led by Trevor Phillis, will travel to Madang in Papua New Guinea in late February or early March to install the kitchen that was removed from the old hospital in Kiama and has been transported to PNG for installation in the hospital in Madang.
Kiama Rotary Club President Elect, Barry Wilson and his wife Jill are currently in India as participants in the End Polio Now Campaign, a global initiative by Rotary.
KIAMA LIONS CLUB
Our Driver Reviver activity has paused for a time until the Australia Day weekend. We had a successful holiday period and received much favourable feedback from the travelling public, many of whom are repeat customers who told us they stopped with us last holidays etc. This makes it worthwhile for us.
On January 25-26 we will be having our usual stand at the Kiama Show where will offer our delightful BBQ fare and will also be manning some of the gates
Our next Dinner meeting will be at the Leagues Club on January 24 where we will be inducting a new member.
We will be starting our interviews next month for those High School students wanting to be selected for the Outward Bound Course scholarships or sponsorships we offer each year.
Don’t forget to make a note in your diary. Friday, April 5, we are having a monster Trivia night at the Pavilion. This will be one of our big fund-raisers of the year so there will be bumper prizes.
