Participants in the Youth Engagement Program (YEP) recently completed the three kilometre paddle from Jones Beach to Boneyard Beach and helped clean up the beach.
They came up with an idea to be more involved with the ocean and join environmental initiative 'Take 3 For The Sea'.
Kiama Downs Surf Club member James Wright said the teens had a great time collecting the rubbish and collecting data for ‘Take 3 For The Sea’.
“The weather was great and I think they were proud to say they have paddled the three kilometres from Jones Beach to Boneyard and back,” he said.
“It was a great start for the YEP program to work alongside ‘Take 3 For The Sea’ also.
“The students were proactive in making sure their local environment is clean for other locals, tourists and for the future.”
The club is hoping the program will offer their young members a pathway through the surf life saving ranks.
“YEP is a great link between nippers and the seniors, and it runs in conjunction with cadets, which is the same age group,” Mr Wright said.
“We really want young people to be more involved in their local surf club, be more aware of the beach environment and to use it respectfully and safely.”
