The Rotary Clubs of Gerringong and Kiama would like to thank the community and our sponsors for their support for the very successful Auto Expo and Family Fun Day held on Sunday, November 11, at the Kiama Showground. The event was an outstanding success raising funds for the melanoma and skin cancer prevention program, a joint initiative of the Gerringong and Kiama Clubs.
This year our program included a SES Jaws of Life demonstration, Jamberoo RFS demonstration, drone demonstrations by Elev8, a driverless car and workshops on Licence Preservation and St John Ambulance First Aid. Over 90 attendees participated in the free skin screening for detection of skin cancers and melanomas.
A highlight for the children, young and old, was an appearance by Chitty Chitty Bang Bang that had been lovingly created by retired limousine builder, Mike Ellard in Berry. Based on the Ian Fleming classic 1968 movie it has taken over two years to complete, including fold out wings.
Classic, vintage and veteran cars came from far and wide to be part of the exhibition. Participants enjoyed the atmosphere and very special community vibe and are keen to come back next year.
In addition to the free skin screening program the funds raised support the work of a PhD student doing research into treatment for Melanoma. Sheena Daignault presented at our Monday night club meeting on her Rotary Health PhD Research. Despite the recent exciting successes in melanoma therapy there is still no cure for this devastating disease once the tumour has spread. Sheena's project aims at exploring proteins responsible for tumour growth, spread and response to anti-cancer drugs.
Rotary will be holding a number of free skin screenings in the community over the summer months but encourages you to make time to have your skin checked next time you visit your GP. Two out of three Australians will develop a skin cancer in their lifetime. Melanoma kills more young Australians, particularly 15-39 year olds, than any other single cancer. Skin checks are quick, painless and save lives.
KIAMA LIONS CLUB
Our teams had great fun at the Kembla Grange races for the Melbourne Cup. It is often tiring but its worth it for what it brings to the club.
We have decided that we will have an official opening of the Carers Cottage on Friday, November 16 at 12 noon with the Mayor and local MP present. We are awaiting the necessary paperwork from Council regarding building certificates etc, but anticipate it being ready by then. Just some small last-minute painting jobs to be done and a good security system installed. We received great positive feedback from our Open Day. The idea of having a formal opening is so that we can publicly thank all those whose names are on the Donors Board.
A couple of weeks ago we held our annual lunch for the visually impaired. Again it was a great success and was very much appreciated by those who attended. This month we will be helping the P &C of Kiama Public School with a BBQ at the market.
