More than 70 primary school aged children were the first to experience Rockshelf Academy’s school holiday workshop program at The Pavilion Kiama.
“We’re proud to report that the workshops went off without a hitch,” co-founder Fran Wood said.
“It was lovely to have kids of all ages and abilities join us, because we really want the wonder of animation to be accessible for all.”
Participants learnt the principles of animation and storytelling, before getting hands on with a range of mediums.
“That’s the beauty of animation,” Mrs Wood said.
“You can bring anything to life. This school holidays we experimented with abstract art, paper, Lego and clay. The kids came up with some amazing concepts.
“The littlies had a ball creating their own fairytales and superhero stories, while the older kids enjoyed making comedies and more complex storylines.
“Premiering their movies on a big screen at the end of the day was a real highlight, and we heard from parents that they were watching them with family and friends for days to come.”
Mrs Wood said participant and parent feedback was really positive. In a post workshop survey 95% of parents said their child had a great time and would love to do it again, and 100% said they felt the workshops provided value for money.
“Moving forward we plan to do lots more workshops in Kiama in the school holidays and expand into Nowra and Shellharbour,” Mrs Wood said.
“We’re also developing our own app, piloting in-school services and hope to deliver workshops in partnership with disability service providers.
“None of this would be possible without the support we’ve received from the Kiama community. We’d like to thank every parent who enrolled their child in a Rockshelf Academy workshop this school holidays, and the team at The Kiama Pavilion, who were absolutely brilliant.”
Rockshelf Academy will announce its January 2019 school holiday program to waitlist members first, followed by a general release later this term.
