For our next dinner meeting we have chosen something a little different, we are going to have an Oktoberfest Partners Night dinner at the 3 Brothers restaurant, which should be great fun. Before that, many of our club are going to the Bush Bank house for a South African Braai or BBQ feast. This is being run by Sonya as a fundraiser for Minnamurra Lions' contribution to the Lions drought relief program.
On October 13 we will running the Chocolate Wheel at the Blue Haven Fete which we have done for many years. There are always good prizes, especially the large hams which come in useful for Christmas. Last weekend our Driver Reviver Caravan was busy at Dunmore and it was nice to chat to so many folks who were making a stop on their journey south to places like Lake Conjola. Our Christmas cakes are proving popular again as are the Christmas puddings and they are for sale in many shops, chemists and doctors surgeries.
KIAMA ROTARY CLUB
The next major event on the Rotary calendar is the Auto Expo on Sunday, November 11, starting at 9am at the Kiama Showground. This is an initiative by the combined Rotary Clubs of Kiama and Gerringong to raise funds for the prevention of skin cancer and melanoma. We invite entries of cars and bikes and encourage vintage, veteran and classic vehicle owners and auto clubs to participate. You can register to exhibit by contacting Bob on 02 42341336 or email kiamaautoexpo@gmail.com. There is no fee to show a vehicle. The cars and bikes will be judged on the day by local celebrities.
Visitors to the exhibition are asked to make a $5 donation per person to Rotary. Rotary allocates these funds to the melanoma and skin cancer prevention program which includes the provision of free skin cancer screening clinics as well as supporting PHd Research in this field. There will be hundreds of cars on display at the very scenic Kiama Showground as well as a range of activities for the entire family including a jumping castle, face painting, food stalls, coffee van and musical entertainment.
In addition to the vintage, veteran and classic cars and bikes there will be displays of mobile homes and leisure vehicles and presentations on automotive related topics. Stallholders include auto suppliers and accessories. GPs will offer free onsite skin screening, during the event, to detect skin cancers and melanomas. So far over 270 people have been screened through this program. Close to 30 per cent of those screened have been referred for further investigation. Two melanomas have been detected. If you are interested in sponsoring this event contact John on 0419546094 or email autoexpokiama@bigpond.com.
