Grigg, who will join fellow Group Seven star Jack Kavanagh (Shellharbour) in the squad, recently got the call Country under 23s coach Josh Cale to tell him the good news.
“I was pretty surprised to get the call up to be honest, after we [Illawarra South Coast Dragons] got smashed in our second game,” Grigg said.
“I didn't think there would be much of a chance of me being selected at all but I’m super excited to be given the chance now.”
Grigg, who helped the Superoos end their 43-year premiership drought in 2017, and his Country squad go into training camp on Friday before jetting off to Papua New Guinea.
“Josh [Cale] hasn’t really told me too much, so I expect I’ll find out a little more about my role in the side this weekend,” Grigg said.
After their training camp, Grigg, 22, and his team mates fly to Brisbane on October 8, before heading to Ipwich’s Len Johnson Oval, where they’ll play the Australia Defence Force side on October 9.
Two days later, the squad will fly out to Port Moresby, where they’ll finalise preparations for their clash with the PNG Digicell Cup representative team at Oil Search National Football Stadium on October 14
“I really don't know what to expect on the tour – I have heard a lot of things about PNG,” he said.
“What I do know though, is it will be some tough hard footy over there.
“It’s a massive opportunity for myself – something I rank right up there with Jamberoo’s premiership.
“I can’t wait to get over there.”
