More than 60 primary school aged kids are already enrolled in Rockshelf Academy’s Abstract Art Animation, 2D Paper Animation, Legomation and Claymation school holiday workshops.
Co-founders and Kiama Downs locals, Fran Wood and Viv Jennings said they’ve been blown away by the positive community response.
“As a parent of two primary school aged children myself, I’m always on the hunt for affordable school holiday activities my kids will love,” Mrs Wood said.
“We want to make hands-on animated storytelling accessible for all children.
“It’s a super fun way to get creative, nurture imagination and communication skills, while utilising technology.”
Mrs Wood said the idea to launch Rockshelf Academy came from their family business, Rockshelf Productions, a Kiama-based animation studio run by Fran’s brother-in-law and Viv’s husband, Phil Jennings.
“Phil’s worked as an animator for almost 15 years with some of the biggest brands in the business,” she said.
“When he founded Rockshelf Productions Viv and I came on board to help it grow.
“Heaps of parents started asking us if we did animation for students, and being a childhood educator, Viv had been thinking about running workshops for some time, so we got together and Rockshelf Academy was born.”
Mrs Wood said that Rockshelf Academy will be the first to offer curriculum-based school holiday workshops and in-school services in the Kiama area.
“We’re so excited to give these kids a great experience this school holidays,” she said.
“Moving forward, our plan is to co-design and pilot animation incursions with local schools, before expanding our school holiday workshop offering.”
