The establishment of the Probus Club of Jamberoo has been initiated by the Rotary Club of Kiama in response to a request by David Hall, a resident of Jamberoo.
The development and support of Probus Clubs is one of Rotary’s Community Service activities focused on seniors. Mal Bracken from the Rotary Club of Kiama accepted the opportunity to assist with the establishment of the Jamberoo Probus Club. Mal invested many voluntary hours into the promotion of the potential club in the media and social media, contact with interested members of the community and finally organising and management of the Foundation meeting.
Mal Bracken chaired the initial meeting which was also attended by Barry Wilson, president elect of Rotary Club of Kiama. Mal presented on the role of Probus and explained the differences between Probus and Rotary. Probus exists for fellowship and fun rather than fund-raising and service work. There were about 35 potential members in attendance, many of whom joined on the day. Probus Clubs generally meet once a month. Probus generally include both men and women and offers fellowship and friendship. There are no fund-raising activities. The regular gatherings offer an opportunity to develop new friendships and engage in new and interesting activities.
The President of the Shellharbour/Kiama Probus Liaison Committee, Guy Funnell, welcomed the formation of the new club which will be the twelfth in the district. Eight out of the nine Management Committee positions were filled on the day and Mal presented the Presidential collar to the new President, Winton Brooke-Smith. Those in attendance passed the five resolutions related to structure of the club, compliance with the legal requirements for NFP associations and organisational structure as well as a resolution regarding meeting frequency, time and venue.
Winton thanked everyone for attending and said he was looking forward to a great year. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 26, at 2pm at Club Jamberoo.
KIAMA LIONS CLUB
We had our most successful Hot rod Show to date on Sunday, September 9. The weather warmed up, the wind dropped and people came out in their hundreds. This was the sixth year we have partnered with the Romans Hot Rod Club. It is always the first Car Show after the winter and the BBQ teams always seem to enjoy it immensely.
Next month we will hold our annual Convention in Bomaderry, at which Kiama Lion Peter Scifleet will be elected District Governor, so a large contingent of our club plan to attend. The keynote speaker will be Dr Mark Cowley from the Garvin Institute.
Four of our members attended the Governor-General's Reception and during his speech Sir Peter Cosgrove applauded the work of the Service Clubs in our town. Our next meeting on the 27th will be a Happy Hour. Work on the Carers Cottage is getting towards the "pointy end" with the erection of IKEA furniture and work starting on the landscaping.
