Kiama Council voted to offer Diggies the lease of the cafe following a formal expression of interest process, which included interviews with the candidates at a meeting on Tuesday night.
Diggies was chosen as the preferred operator based on menu and pricing, picnic/takeaway options that will add to the existing Blowhole Point Reserve operations, market rental valuation evidence, experience in the industry and successful operation of Diggies North Wollongong Beach as direct comparison, commitment to continued employment of local people, reputation and trading hours.
Diggies was opened in 2004 by the Crinis family, and is situated opposite Wollongong’s North Beach.
According to Diggies’ website, “when it comes to the food, the whole philosophy is a simple menu with a focus on seasonal, good quality local produce.”
Current operators, Milk and Honey, withdrew from the Expressions Of Interest process after several weeks of negotiations with council.
Co-owner Liz Lewis described the process as “more stressful than I can explain”.
The current five year lease dissolved on June 30, after which time Milk and Honey was operating on a month-by-month lease.
