But once his Group Seven commitments are over for 2018, unlike most of his teammates, his season won’t finish, after being named in the Royal Australian Navy Rugby League side, the Tridents for the tour of Great Britain and Tri-Nations Tournament, from October 27 to November 14.
“It means a lot to me to be selected in this team,” Cornell said.
“It was always something I wanted to do when I first joined the navy, so to be in the squad now is a pretty good feeling.”
The outside back was named in Tridents squad, which also features Gerringong Lions product David Catterall, after strong showing on the side’s tour of New Zealand last year, as well as a match at Coffs Harbour earlier in the year.
Before his team heads abroad to play the United Kingdom and New Zealand navy sides, they will have a short training camp in Sydney to prepare.
“Having already played New Zealand last year, I know they are going to be very tough and physical,” he said.
“They beat as in the dying minutes last year, so we would like to get one back on them this year.
“In terms of the UK side, I’m not too sure about their squad but I’ll make sure I’m prepared as best as I can be, for what will no doubt be a physical clash.”
While he has one eye on the international tour, Cornell, 22, is fully focused on helping his Knights’ side claim their first premiership in the top grade since 1985.
“My main goal right now is continuing to play the best I can for Kiama,” he said.
“Hopefully we can go one better than last year and claim the trophy.
“Then after the season, I hope to take my form with the Knights over to the UK.”
The Tridents will play the Royal New Zealand Navy side on November 7 before tackling the Royal Navy (United Kingdom) three days later on November 10 – with both matches being played at Burnaby Road.
