“Guides give girls the chance to be themselves and grow in self-confidence. They also have fun with other girls outside of school and form lasting friendships,” Kiama district manager Lisa Pickens said.

“Girl Guides builds resilience and independence through games, outdoor activities, teamwork craft, cooking and camping. 

“Guiding also develops their awareness of the environment and community issues and give service to the community.”

Kiama Girl Guides is looking for women 18 years and older, who want to inspire, make a difference to the girls’ lives, make new friends, learn new skills, contribute to the community, and watch the girls develop skills and independence.

“No previous guiding experience is necessary, just a willingness to learn more about the principals of guiding,” Mrs Pickens said.

“Unit leaders and assistant unit leaders are involved with the weekly program of the unit, helping the girls to plan their activities, achieve their goals, and have fun. 

“Guides also participate in occasional weekend camps and activity days.”

Mrs Pickens said she understands many parents and community members would like to help out but can’t commit to being a leader. 

“There are still a lot of ways to be involved to suit a variety of talents and the time you have available to volunteer,” she said. 

“For example, assist with maintaining the hall, promote Guides in the community, help raise funds to assist with hall insurance, resources and equipment used by the local Guide unit.”

Leaders complete the Girl Guide Leadership Qualification, which includes participation in a webinar, a weekend training and First Aid.

While training, leaders are paired with a learning partner and supported by other leaders in the team. The cost of training, uniform and resources is covered by the Kiama group.

All volunteers are asked to complete a Working with Children Check.

Kiama Girl Guides is suitable for girls form six to 14 years of age, new girls are welcome to come and try Guides at any time.

The group meets on Thursday afternoons during school terms at the cottage behind Hindmarsh Park, Collins Lane, Kiama.
