“This small South Coast community has a proud history of high achieving sports people in many different sporting arenas,” Lions’ Peter Jeffrey said.
“When Lions started this project, we were pleasantly surprised by the large number of local young people who have highly excelled in their chosen sports, and particularly so with the new generation of up-and-coming young achievers, as well as other already well established sports people.”
Sports Stars featured in the calendar for 2019 include:
- Ethan Smith – surf life saving
- Gerringong Breakers FC Women's 1st grade team – soccer
- Olivia Wilson – acrobatic gymnastics
- Grace Stewart – hockey
- Holly Wishart – surfing
- Gerringong Public School boys touch football team
- Amanda Reid – paralympian
- Lauren Farquhar, Taylah Doosey and Maja Moore – acrobatic gymnastics
- Gerringong Lions RLFC U/14 team – rugby league
- Ruan Sims – rugby union and rugby league
- Charlie Jeffers – lawn bowls
- Sally Fitzgibbons – pro surfing
Proceeds from the sale of the calendar will go towards prostate cancer research, treatment and support, with proceeds to go to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA).
PCFA is the peak national body for prostate cancer in Australia, dedicated to reducing the impact of prostate cancer on Australian men, their partners and families.
“They contacted my coach and she asked me if I would like to be part of it – I felt pretty proud,” former acrobatic gymnast Olivia Wilson said.
“Anyone can get prostate cancer, you never know who it might happen to and it’s important we have enough funding.”
Wilson has retired from the sport, but is still involved with her former club.
“I was coaching straight after I retired, I’ve moved to Brisbane now, but I’m still involved in the club at home,” she said.
The Lions Club is seeking sponsorship from local organisations, clubs, businesses and community members to help cover the cost of production to enable a good return for the chosen charity.
If you are interested in supporting this cause, contact Peter Jeffrey on 0402 802 707.
It is anticipated the calendar will be available for sale to the general public by mid September and will be available directly from the Lions Club of Gerringong at $16 each.
