“Tearing down the cabins at Blowhole Point makes as much sense as pulling down our lighthouse,” Cr Honey said.
His comments come in response to Cr Matt Brown’s suggestion to replace the holiday cabins and tennis courts with restaurants and shops, an idea based on the new Tourism Opportunity Plan developed by Destination Kiama.
It identifies key tourism experiences in the area, as well as ways to sustainably develop these experiences.
“The Tourism Opportunity Plan is about enhancing our iconic attractions, not destroying them, this includes Blowhole Point,” Cr Honey said.
“Council has a strategic masterplan for our holiday parks, including Kiama Harbour, which has seen the investment of millions of dollars to make them world-class.”
A Fairfax Media poll revealed a strong majority of voters do not want to see any changes to Blowhole Point.
In less than 24 hours, 848 people voted on the poll, which asked, ‘Do you support plans to remove all the cabins at Blowhole Point and build shops and restaurants into the hill?’
A 77 per cent majority voted no.
Voters comprised of Kiama Independent and Illawarra Mercury readers.
Narelle King is joined the chorus of residents concerned about overdevelopment in Kiama.
“There is already enough congestion in Kiama,” she said via Facebook.
“It’s impossible to find a parking spot and this will make it even worse.
“The feel of Kiama is disappearing due to all the apartments being built and no decent infrastructure included.
“Where is all the so-called 'green space' going?
“How many shops does a beautiful community need?”
