The Dementia Alliance Group (DAGs), comprised of residents living with dementia, has played a key role in the internationally recognised Dementia Friendly Kiama Project.
Now the DAGs are hosting a workshop to help others living with dementia. The free workshop is being held at The Gerroa Fishermans Club on Friday 27 July, starting at 9.30am.
This is the first dementia workshop created by people living with dementia for people living with dementia, and their carers.
The workshop provide general understanding and awareness of the disease and some of the strategies to adopt. This includes providing a person-centred approach towards care during the different stages of dementia.
The agenda is:
• What is Dementia – everything you were afraid to ask
• How it affects people both those diagnosed and those around them
• Strategies for communication
• Strategies for support
• Discussion forum with people living with dementia
A key strategy to help Kiama become a dementia-friendly community is expanding the discussion of dementia, to destigmatise the disease and build awareness. This especially includes ensuring the people with dementia, their families and carers are part of such discussions.
There are more than 425,416 Australians living with dementia. Of the people living with dementia 55 per cent (234,049) are women and 45 per cent (191,367) are men.
Dementia is the second leading cause of death of Australians, contributing to 5.4 per cent of all deaths in men and 10.6 per cent of all deaths in women.
