International service clubs like Lions and Rotary have a long tradition of making awards to members and others for outstanding service. The awards are usually funded by the local club and a set contribution is paid to an Australian or international foundation to further the work of the organisation.
The founder of Lions in Australia in 1947, William R. Tresise, is recognised by a Fellowship Award under the auspices of the Australian Lions Foundation (ALF) . A Lions club making such an award thus contributes to the ALF, and the Lions Carers Cottage project currently being undertaken in Kiama has benefited from a grant sourced by such an award made to an outstanding Lion.
Many local Lions members have been honoured over the years by the award of a James D. Richardson award, which also goes to the ALF for Lions community service projects in Australia.
Every time you support a Lions project, such as our caravan at the Sunday markets, you are helping a wide range of projects through our foundations. We thank you for your ongoing support.
KIAMA ROTARY
On Monday, July 9, the Rotary Club of Kiama held the annual Changeover Dinner at the Kiama Leagues Club. This event celebrated the achievements of the outgoing president Lloyd Chatfield who thanked the club members, board of directors and friends of Rotary for their support over the last year. The chains of office were passed to the incoming president Tonia Barnes who introduced the 2018-2019 Board of Directors and set the direction for the coming year under the global theme of “Be the Inspiration”.
The dinner was attended by many family, friends and invited guests supporting the executive in the transition to the 67th year of service to the Kiama Community. This event presented an opportunity to recognise the service of key individuals in the club. The Robert East Member of Year, which is voted on by members of the club, was awarded to Mal Bracken. This year three Paul Harris Awards, the highest level of award within Rotary, were awarded by President Lloyd to David Smark, John Worstencroft and Noel Edgell in recognition of their ongoing commitment to service through Rotary.
Our club members enjoy friendship, professional development and service to the community and meets at the Kiama Leagues Club on Monday at 6.30pm for 7pm. For more information to attend as a visitor or to join the Club, contact John Kenny on 0434 989 253
