The win was the third on the trot for the Lions, however they were made to work hard for the win by a Jets side that refused to give in at any time during the 80 minutes.
Things looked promising early for the home side when they opened their account inside the first two minutes.
A half break by Nathan Ford put the Lions on the front foot and the Gerringong hooker found Matt Winchester in support and the fullback raced away.
Jake Taylor knocked over the conversion for a 6-nil Gerringong lead.
The Lions would hold that lead for 10 minutes until it was the turn of the Jets’ fullback Jake Gould to match the efforts of his opposite number.
After building some pressure on the Lions’ line, the live-wire Gould got on the outside of the Gerringong defence on the back of a scrum win and crossed on the left edge.
Half Shane Dickinson knocked over the conversion to level the scores at 6-all.
Some ill-discipline by the Lions in the ensuing set gave the Jets another attacking opportunity soon after and they again capitalised.
Winger Tyson Simpson plucked a Zac Blattner kick from the air and did just enough to plant the ball.
Dickinson landed his second goal and the Jets were up 12-6.
The Lions would soon trim that gap as they took advantage of a glut of possession on the Jets’ line.
After the visitors turned in some committed scrambling defence, the Lions found a way through after a classy flick-pass from Winchester allowed Danny Wedd to stroll over for to bring the score to 12-10.
Winchester would soon be in the thick of things again, with the Gerringong custodian dummying his way over on the right fringe to give his side back the lead at 14-12 with 15 minutes left in the half.
The Lions then extended their lead, this time thanks to Toby Gumley-Quine.
Joel Roberts grabbed a Brad Davidson kick from the air and found Gumley-Quine who crossed in the left corner.
Taylor knocked over the conversion for a 20-12 lead that would stand until the break.
The start of the second half again saw the Lions waste little time in opening the scoring as they bought the Jets’ defence undone in the 45th minute.
Winchester was again the danger man and after attracting a number of defenders he flicked a ball back on the inside to replacement Ewen McCarroll who dived over.
A late hit on McCarroll by Gould made matters even worse for the Jets as the Lions were awarded a possible eight-point try.
Taylor knocked over both shots at goal and the Lions jumped to a 28-12 lead.
It was then the Jets’ turn to mimic what happened in the first half, as they soon hit back to trim the Lions’ lead.
This time it was centre Nathan Falzon who proved to be too much of a handful close to the line and crossed to the left of the posts.
Dickinson added the conversion to bring the Gerringong lead back to 10 at 28-18.
After tries had become a regular occurrence, the game then turned into more of an arm-wrestle as the Lions looked to land the knock-out blow while the Jets did all they could to stay in the match.
With 15 minutes remaining the Lions managed to break the deadlock.
A quick shift down the right edge got the ball to fill-in winger Isaac Russell who danced past the cover defence and ran around to score under the posts.
Taylor converted for a 34-18 Gerringong lead.
The Jets weren’t done just yet and with a little under 10 minutes remaining they gave themselves a glimmer of hope when Dylan Farrell barrelled over.
Dickinson added his fourth goal from 34-24.
The Jets launched another attacking raid after Farrell’s try, but a timely intercept by Roberts, in his 200th game, snuffed out the visitor’s chances.
The Gerringong lock raced away but was bought down by Gould, though the Jets’ fullback finished the game in the sin-bin as the result of a professional foul.
The Lions then sealed the win when Corey Mulhall muscled his way over in the following set, with Taylor converting to round out the score at a 40-24.
Ford, Winchester and Kal Collins all turned in strong performances for the Lions, while Gould, Farrell and Falzon did all they could for the Jets.
