Amanda from Dance Sensations works with hundreds of teenage girls each week in Kiama and Shellharbour, and knows the challenges they face.

“They all start on Instagram at nine or 10 years old,” Amanda said.

“With social digital engagement occurring at a younger age it poses new risks in terms of bullying and cyber safety.”

One in seven children report being cyber bullied in the past year.

Amanda has organised a charity event, with funds going to the Alannah and Madeline Foundation, funding programs that combat cyber bullying. 

Students and prospective students are invited to DS Spirit Night at Shellharbour City Staduim of Friday, July 6. 

“We wanted to host an event that was lots of fun, included team bonding and of course dancing to bring all of our students together, but at the same time use the opportunity to raise awareness and money for a great cause,” Amanda said.

“We wanted to find a charity that related to our students.”

Dancing has been a great outlet for many of the students – a good reason to spend time away from their devices.

“We’re big on building those relationships inside the classrooms,” Amanda said.

“A lot of them dance in the same classes from when they’re young, there’s that sense of belonging.

“Our teachers are conscious of celebrating different successes, as they each achieve their own goals.”
