With players still missing through injury and with the clash with away games Gerringong and Kiama coming up, it was a vital that Jamberoo were able to notch a win, while the Stingrays were looking to bounce back from last week’s heavy home loss to Warilla-Lake South Gorillas.
In fact it was the Stingrays who took an early lead when, on the back of two early turnovers from the home side, they grabbed a 6-nil lead when winger Pat Woodley dived over in the corner and five-eighth Aaron Merrick landed a sideline conversion.
Jamberoo responded in good style with tries in the 13th and 17th minute when they exposed the Stingrays right side defence with centre Simon Maslanka and then fullback Dean Watling scoring out wide with Watling converting once, for the home side to lead 10-6.
In the 23rd minute they went the opposite side of the park where backrower Joe Rokoqo and centre Corey Grigg were causing all sorts of problems for the Stingrays defence and it was Rokoqo who was on the end of a Grigg pass to score out wide for a 14-6 lead.
Unfased, the Stingrays his back again to close the gap to four when centre Kyle Garcia squeezed over in the corner, but Merrick wasn’t able to repeat his sideline conversion heroics, but the visitors were back in the game at 14-10.
Jamberoo had the last laugh right on half-time when Grigg again made the break and winger Ben Barnard sped away to score in the corner and Watling, who was uncharacteristically off target with two earlier kicks, grabbed his mojo back with a sideline conversion.
Jamberoo came out breathing fire after the break and had two more tries in the opening 10 minutes of the second half, with Grigg and second-rower James Gilmore adding tries, while Jono Dallas added another in the 55th minute as the home team surged.
To the Stingrays credit they rallied and repelled the Superoos attack for long periods until the final minutes when replacement backrower Evan Perkins scored beside the posts. Watling landed his fifth for the day to round out the scoring.
In a solid team performance for the home side, Grigg was a standout Man-of-the-Match, while Joe Rokoqo, Dean Watling, Luke Dudgeon and Simon Maslanka also played leading roles, while Aaron Merrick, Kaden Towle, Freddy Andale and Todd Sault were probably best for the Stingrays.
