Rotary Clubs of Kiama and Gerringong are teaming together to save lives by offering free skin screenings. Two out of three Australians will develop a skin cancer. Melanoma kills more young Australians (20-39 year olds) than any other single cancer.
Rotary have run three screening events in Kiama and Gerringong in the last year. Local GPs, Dr Robyn Dalley, Dr John McAlpine, Dr Brian Cox and Dr Mark Burgess have volunteered their services. Of the 185 people screened, so far, almost 30 per cent have been referred to their GPs for further investigation of skin lesions. Unfortunately, we have two confirmed reports of melanomas from those who have been screened. Both have had good outcomes as a result of early detection.
Early detection saves lives and it could be yours or someone you love. The next free screening will be at the Presbyterian Church hall in Kiama, near Black Beach on Sunday, April 29, between 12 noon and 3pm.
KIAMA LIONS
This is proving a very busy time of year for us. Last weekend we had the markets, this week we have a BBQ at the new Bunnings to raise money for one of our members, Then we have the Anzac Day parade with the Driver Reviver set up working and possibly another BBQ event.
At our last Dinner Meeting we heard about some of the fighting that went on adjacent to the Kokoda trail and how important those actions became.
Work on the Carers cottage goes on apace. This week we took delivery of a full load of mixed Gyprock thanks to CSR. who donated it and will bring some more down from Sydney later this week. All the interior walls and ceilings have been insulated and the place feels warmer already.
Thanks to the generosity of Chris Marshall, our plasterer, in one day using Lions as apprentices, we have got all the difficult Gyprock parts in place. We are using sound proofing boards in the ensuites to deaden any sound from outside and already we notice a difference. It is estimated that we will need another full day to finish gyprocking the whole building. In the meantime, work has begun on the rear to level the ground ready for the car park and decking.
