Reilly said a variety of music styles had influenced his latest single – A Set Of Reasons – which he will launch at the May 24 concert.
“I’ve always loved hip-hop, grime and punk rock, and I really wanted to see how I could use elements from those styles, and apply them to my somewhat established style of solo singer/songwriter stuff,” he said.
“In a literary sense, I wanted the song to feel sort of hypnotic and I utilised repeated phrases to give that sense – I liked the idea of the phrases being the same, but also escalating in intensity.”
Reilly’s last six singles have played on high rotation on triple j Unearthed digital radio, with four of those featuring on triple j.
Reilly described his sound as “emotional, intimate and atmospheric”.
“It should be quite a massive sound,” Reilly said.
“I’m now playing with a six-piece band. I used to just play solo, which was great for creating intimacy but now there’s a lot of different energy floating around, and we try and make it a fun, high energy show.”
Reilly has performed in shows at The Metro Theatre, The Factory Theatre and The Sydney Opera House Forecourt, as well as East Coast tours where he’s opened for international and national acts such as Kevin Devine (USA), Into It Over It (USA), Gavin Degraw (USA), Frazey Ford (CAN), Tiny Ruins (NZ) and Bec Sandridge.
