Ward said that this event would deliver significant benefits to local businesses and accommodation providers.
“The Kiama Bodyboard Slam will be one of five Association of Professional Bodyboarders (APB) World Tour events, ensuring the best bodyboarders in the world travel to the South Coast to compete,” he said.
“It is expected to attract more than 450 overnight visitors to the region and deliver close to $300,000 in visitor spend.
“NSW is the home of surfing in Australia and with Kiama already home to the World Surf League Junior World Championships, it is the ideal location to host this world bodyboarding event.”
The NSW Minister for Tourism and Major Events Adam Marshall said the event would showcase the region to visitors from around the world.
“Elite athletes from around the world and their supporters will spend almost two weeks in the region, meaning more heads on hotel beds, diners in restaurants and shoppers in boutiques,” he said.
“With the competition running for 11 days, I encourage all visitors to take some time to explore our stunning region.
“From kayaking and wine tasting in Kangaroo Valley, to the farmers’ market and award-winning restaurants in Berry and the exhilarating Kiama Coastal Walk, there is something for everyone.”
The Kiama Bodyboard Slam waiting period will be from July 30 to August 9, 2018.
It is the third stop on the APB World Tour, which also includes events in Chile, Brazil, Portugal and the Canary Islands.
