Around 300,000 women and 3 million newborns die each year from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth. Most of these deaths occur in developing countries. To help address this, Rotary and other volunteers conduct fundraising events and engage in the assembly of Birthing Kits.
Kiama Rotary has been supporting this life saving project for many years under the dedicated leadership of Rotarian Bobbie East. Under her direction, the club has sent hundreds of kits to Papua New Guinea and thus helping save many lives.
Birthing Kits are a simple and effective tool for basic infection prevention and first-line childbirth care. The components are selected in line with global best practice.
Each kit contains six essential components: soap, plastic sheet, gloves, gauze, cord ties to cleanly tie the umbilical cord and sterile blade to cut the umbilical cord and reduce risk of newborn tetanus and sepsis. Kiama Rotary birthing kits also include a baby blanket, cap, shawl and booties.
KIAMA LIONS
Last week our club was saddened by personal tragedies affecting three of our members. Our thoughts and prayers are with the members and their nearest and dearest.
Last week’s dinner meeting was addressed by the CEO of V360, a charity set up to support homeless veterans. It was a chilling reminder that many ex-servicemen struggle to acclimatise to returning to civilian life after time in a combat scenario.
Last weekend a number of Lions carried out a bucket collection for the Victims of the Tarthra bushfire outside Woolworths and throughout Terralong St. Everyone was very supportive and generous and in a short time we raised over $4100 which will go to the support fund. At the same time other members carried out the door to door collection for the Red Cross.
The Carers Cottage has been painted and after much discussion a bright colour is to be used on the front door. the first coat of which has been applied. Our thanks to Ray Leishmann of City Coast plumbers for installing our internal first fix. This means that we need to fit the insulation and can then turn our attention to the gyprocking.
