Documentary, The Passion of Music, about local orchestra Steel City Strings premiered on February 11 in Wollongong to an enthusiastic full house.

The film was introduced by respected conductor and music education advocate Richard Gill who was full of praise for the orchestra.

The region was also on show with great shots of the coast, escarpment and majestic views of the steelworks reflecting the origin of the orchestra. Hearing local stories, seeing local places and faces on the big screen was a powerful experience for all.

Film maker Tony Williams spent two years recording performances and interviews with members of the orchestra and many, many hours editing the final product. The accomplished orchestra filmed performing in local venues amazed the audience and the insightful interviews showing the meaning of music in the lives of players were truly inspiring.

Violinist Shaun Warden, who grew up in Kiama, was featured in the film as a guest leader of the orchestra in a performance in 2016.

Steel City Strings will perform much loved chamber works from the romantic repertoire for their next concerts in Kiama, Wollongong and Berry following the success of the documentary.

Dvorak’s String Quartet No. 12 known as the “American” is a joyful piece of music and Mendelssohn’s String Quartet No. 2 is one of his most passionate works – both these works are arranged for string orchestra.

Sad Jigs by local composer Andrew Ford has references to Debussy and Australian composer John Buller and is dedicated to his memory.

This music is accessible to all - get along and be inspired.
