A man has been arrested and is helping police with their inquiries.
Police say the elderly woman was approached by a man while sitting in her vehicle in a car park on Perry Street about 11.15am.
It’s alleged the man repeatedly punched the woman to the head, causing severe lacerations, before fleeing.
Police say a witness, who heard the woman scream, chased a man and held him in a staircase while emergency services were contacted.
Officers from South Coast Police District attended and arrested a 43-year-old man, before taking him to Batemans Bay Police Station.
An Ambulance NSW spokesman said the woman was transported to Batemans Bay Hospital with suspected facial injuries.
A NSW Health spokesman said the woman had been taken to Moruya Hospital for further assessment, and is in a stable condition.
