Kiama Library has announced a new local history competition in memory of former librarian Ken Donnellan.

The Ken Donnellan Memorial Local History Competition will be an annual competition, alternating between writing and photography.

The competition will be open to year five and six students who either go to school within the municipality or live here.

This year’s competition involves writing a World War One diary entry based on The Names on the Wall – Ken Donnellan’s book on soldiers from Gerringong who served in The Great War.

Imagine you are a World War I soldier in the trenches in a war zone. You are keeping a diary of your daily activities so you can show your family when you return home to Australia. Write a 500-word diary entry detailing a day in your life.

Kiama Council is donating $100 to the winner from each local primary school and $200 to each participating school’s library fund.

Entries close at 4pm on Friday, April 6.

The entry form, which contains full details is available at www.library.kiama.nsw.gov.au
