The weekend kicked off on Friday night at the Kiama Leagues Club with Paul Sironen and Doug Walters joining the Cavs for the Legends Dinner. Sironen started the evening with stories from his long and illustrious career with Balmain, NSW and Australia.
Walters then took to the stage and had the crowd hanging off every word as he related hilarious anecdotes and experiences from a very different era of cricket.
The Under 16s chased Dapto's score of 123 and were in early trouble at 3/5. Darcy Surman (16) and Hugo Ikeda steadied the ship, taking the score to 53 before Hugo fell.
From there, the wickets fell constantly around Jackson Anthony who top scored with a well made 37. When the 9th wicket fell on 105 the game was going to Dapto, but a great 10th wicket fightback saw the Cavs tie the score.
It was a mixed bag for the two Cavs senior teams, with second grade recording a commanding victory over local rivals Gerringong, while third grade went down to The Rail.
In second grade, Gerringong won the toss and elected to bat. Glen Cleary (4/11) tore through the Jets’ top order in his 10 straight overs.
The Cavs’ bowling attack saw Steve Piper (4/27), Luke Day ( 1/15) and Hugo Ikeda (1/10) roll the Jets for 65. Captain Ben Jones (31) and Blake Harrison (27) combined for a 10-wicket victory and top spot on the ladder.
Third grade bowled first at Bonaira St as The Rail posted a total of 5/260 of their 50 overs. Pick of the bowlers was Matthew Laughton with 3/27, with Ben Mulcahy, Adam Mackrell and Luke 'Pope' Francis taking one wicket each.
The strong Kiama batting lineup were cruising at 1/100 approaching the drinks break. Adam Mackrell was run out for 27, and when Brad Creighton (46) and Bryce Koop (5) followed soon after the Cavs were suddenly 4/110.
A patient knock from Liam Mackrell (10) while big hitters Al Stafford (39) and Luke Francis (30) saw the Cavs claw back but the Cavs’ last four wickets fell for just six runs, seeing them bowled out for 201.
The weekend was rounded out with the Bunnings BBQ.
