Air monitors installed after asbestos fill found at leisure centre

Kiama Council has halted construction of extra car parks at the Kiama Leisure Centre following the uncovering of old fill that included asbestos fragments.

Council crews have erected screening and air monitoring equipment following the discovery.

An independent laboratory has tested the asbestos pieces, and detected no fibres.

As such, the material poses a minimal health threat.

Initial assessments indicate the asbestos is intact, posing a minimal health threat.

However full measures are in place to ensure the safety of workers and users of the Leisure Centre.

Patrons of the Leisure Centre and the nearby skate park are still able to access both facilities.
