Inspector Brian Pedersen, from Lake Illawarra police, said the motorcycle was travelling south on Fern Street, over the Omega Bridge, when the accident happened about 6.35pm.
“As it [the motorcycle] has gone over a crest, it’s collided with the rear of a Volkswagen Amarok ute,” Inspector Pedersen said.
The rider, a 39-year-old man, sustained chest and pelvic injuries, as well as fractures to his arms and legs.
He was taken to a rescue helicopter, which landed at the nearby Boxsell Oval, and flown to Sydney’s St George Hospital.
The man remained at the hospital in a serious but stable condition on Thursday morning.
Inspector Pedersen said police believed the rider was travelling in excess of the speed limit at the time of the accident.
Fern Street was closed for about five hours as crash investigators examined the scene. The road reopened about 12.15am on Thursday.
Kiama SES crews also responded to the crash, with volunteers helping paramedics treat the man and load him into an ambulance.
