Illawarra public schools have benefited to the tune of $17.7 million thanks to a NSW Government blitz on roofing, flooring, painting and other maintenance projects.

That’s how much money Parliamentary Secretary for Education Gareth Ward revealed on Monday was spent on reducing the schools’ planned maintenance lists.
“For the Illawarra electorates of Kiama, Heathcote, Keira, Wollongong and Shellharbour – the maintenance list has been reduced by $17.7 million,” Mr Ward said.
The NSW Department of Education will this week release its latest audit showing its planned maintenance liability has been reduced from a projected $775 million at June 2016 to $570 million by the end of 2017 – a reduction of more than $200 million.
The latest audit is the first time since 2012 a full review of the condition of all schools has been completed..
NSW Education Minister Rob Stokes welcomed the results of the latest Education Department audit and noted that more progress will be made in the coming months with another $100 million allocated towards further maintenance in the 2017-18 financial year.
Mr Ward added he was pleased to see the NSW Government delivering “these important works for our local Illawarra schools”.
Illawarra schools which benefited include:
- Bulli High School which has had its planned maintenance liability reduced by $1.9 million;
- Wollongong High School of the Performing Arts - $1.8 million;
- Smiths Hill High School - $1.7 million;
- Oak Flats High School - $1.1 million;
- Corrimal High School - $1.1 million;
- Keira High School - $1 million;
- Woonona Public School - $853,074;
- Figtree High School - $771,110;
- Bomaderry High School - $525,585;
- Gerringong Public School - $383,575;
- Albion Park High School - $313,877;
- Kiama High School - $285,282;
- Cambewarra Public School - $223,350;
- Minnamurra Public School - $174,609
