We will operate a gold-coin donation, sausage sizzle at Kiama Showground on Monday, February 5 for the Kiama Leg of the 2018 Gold Coast XXI Commonwealth Games, Queen’s Baton Relay. Join us at the Showground from 12:00pm – 2:00 pm and be a part of this historic event.
This week, we started dismantling the old kitchen at Barroul House (old Kiama Hospital). The building itself is heritage listed and will be retained and refurbished as a community centre within the new complex.
During our last construction project in Papua New Guinea during 2014, we identified that the Madang Regional Hospital’s kitchen was in dire need of renovation. We investigated the project at the time but determined that it would be too cost-prohibitive for us to proceed.
In a great example of timely recycling and community co-operation, we recently approached Kiama Council and they agreed that we could remove the old kitchen fittings from Barroul House and ship them to Madang. Two members will fly to Madang next month to confirm project details and the shipping/construction project will take place later in the year.
KIAMA LIONS
Lions had a very successful Show thanks to an amazing team of folks who filled all the shifts and cooked despite horribly humid conditions inside the tent. We also tried our new Lion Burgers and they were a hit. We are particularly grateful to the associates, partners and friends who helped us all through the Show.
We had some drama on the Sunday morning when we came to dismantle our equipment and take it to our storage area, only to find that the entrance to our store was being dug up to repair a significant gas leak. Thanks to the Lions who stored our stuff overnight until we could back in.
This month we will be interviewing a number of youngsters from Kiama High School who hope that we will sponsor them for the Outward Bound Course sometime in April. We will be interviewing them during the course of this month.
The new roof on our Carers Cottage is taking shape and should be completed very shortly. Inside the teams have been hard at work covering the old floor with plywood prior to putting down a new floor. We are most grateful to Kiama Bowling Club for their $500 donation for the Cottage as part of their Charity fundraising night.
