The day was the idea of Tom Norris and involved players wearing commemorative pink caps, umpire Jackson Surman wore a pink bandana on his hat, playing with special pink McGrath Foundation stumps and collecting donations at the game for the foundation.
Kiama got back in the winners circle and regained first place on the points table with a convincing victory over Kookas. Kiama scored 6 for 223 off their 50 overs and bowled Kookas out for 90 in only 34 overs.
Zac Parker continued his good form with a styish 73 and was well supported by Captain Ben Jones with 33 and Tom Murray 30.
A score of 223 was always going to be hard to chase on the very slow Cavalier Park outfield The wicket is in great shape due to some hard work by curator, Jaya Hartgerinck and the outfield has a good cover of grass due to recent rain and the hard work of council. However, it needs to be cut lower so players get the reward they deserve for good stroke play.
Kookas chase got off to a bad start losing a wicket in the first over with the main destroyers being the evergreen Glen "The original Big Show" Cleary taking 5 wickets for 12 runs off his 10 overs and young Hugo Ikeda taking 2 for 6 off 7 overs.
Kiama Cavalier's 3rd grade side continued their run to defend their title with a determined win over Shellharbour at Bonaira Oval.
Shellharbour batted first and scored 154 in 48 overs but were chased down by Kiama who sored 8 for 161 in reply.
Wickets in the Shellharbour innings were spead between multiple wicket takers Mick Sharman, Jason Horley and Adam Mackrell. While Cavaliers willy legspinner, Geoff McIntyre, followed his 4 for 5 off 5 overs against Jamberoo last week with a very economical spell that fustrated the 'Harbour batsmen.
Again chasing a total was hard work on a lush Bonaira outfield that may look great but is very hard to score runs on if batsmen play shots along the ground.
Brad Creighton started with a quick fire 52 before Jason Horley and Mich Sharman finished off the chase with 20 each.
Kiama have consolidated their position in second place and are giving themselves a great chance to back up last year’s premiership.
The wins were celebrated at a very successful club BBQ held on Saturday night at Kiama Leagues Club.
Cricket and Rugby League will come together on Friday, February 9 when cricket larrikin, Doug Walters and League great, Paul Sironen join the Cavaliers at Kiama Leagues Club for a night of stories from years gone by and some great insights into their respective modern day games.
