The non-competitive program for girls and boys aged two to 12 years currently runs at Figtree, Corrimal and Lake Illawarra and will open in Kiama on February 17.
“We have been operating in the Illawarra just under three years now,” co-owner and manager of Grasshopper Soccer Illawarra Tony Coppola said.
“We play outside and run five programs designed around age group, skill level and coordination.”
Mr Coppola said their motto is "Be Outside, Have Fun, Play Soccer".
“We teach children the basic skills of soccer by playing fun games to allow children to learn while having fun,” he said.
“The games are designed so all children have a ball and participate in the games at all times, ensuring children are not left out and are encouraged to have a go and have fun.”
Mr Coppola runs the program alongside his brother-in-law Louie Marras, his sister Teresa and wife Wendy.
“Myself and Louie are affectionately known as Coach Tony and Coach Louie to the little grasshoppers,” he said.
“Even the parents (big grasshoppers) call us by these names.
“Louie and I are passionate about soccer and have always been looking for something special to do to incorporate our passion for soccer – Grasshopper Soccer has allowed us to do so.
“We could not have imagined the impact we have had on families who have joined our program. To us having a positive impact on a child’s life is so rewarding.”
Mr Coppola said the program was not only about learning soccer skills, but also about:
- Building self confidence
- Boosting self confidence
- Building social skills
- Learning how to listen and take instructions
- Meeting people (parents and children)
- Making friends
- Being part of a team
- Getting children out of the house away from TV and off the internet
- Getting active
- Trying something different
- Having fun
