“As a young female, I think it is so important to be a leader in the community to promote the change you want to see,” she said.
“Opportunities like the showgirl offer a springboard for this and more community involvement. I want to use this as a platform to improve my confidence. Not just as a confident public speaker, but to be confident in my views, knowledge and self.”
Currently working as a research assistant in biomechanics, one day Christie would like to complete her doctorate of medicine and practice in regional areas.
“This last year has been my biggest year yet. I moved away from home for the first time to the Gold Coast to begin my Masters of Physiotherapy, discovered that it wasn't for me and came back to Gerringong,” she said.
“I think sometimes you need to take a step back to appreciate the bigger picture. Being away from a place in which I had such strong ties to the community, made me realise how much I value this place.
Christie has been involved in Werri Beach Boardriders, Gerringong Ballet and Dance, Disables Surfers and South Coast Youth Leadership Form and believes community involvement is an integral component of keeping regional centres running.
“I wanted to do the showgirl competition because I want to give back, I want to show how much my home means to me, and I want to make sure I can do everything in my power to continue to improve this incredible place,” she said.
