Emergency services were called to the restaurant on the Illawarra Highway at Tullimbar at 5.26am. Fire and Rescue NSW crews from Albion Park and Dapto plus the Rural Fire Service were in attendance.
Fire and Rescue NSW Duty Commander for the Illawarra Inspector John Hawes said smoke was issuing from the roof of the building with firefighters discovering there were numerous small fires inside.
“With multiple seats of fire it’s quite clearly that something untoward has occurred so it’s over to the police to investigate,” he said.
“[RFS] are going to send one of their investigating officers to work with police to make any sort of determination.”
Inspector Hawes said crews were quick to respond and quick to act with all fires extinguished by 5.50am.
It’s believed the kitchen sustained extensive damage.
The Tullimbah Inn was built in the late 1800’s and according to its owners is one of the few remaining buildings of its type locally.
A crime scene has been established and will be examined later today by Fire Investigators and Scene of Crime officers once the scene is declared safe.
