Cr Steel received the outstanding service award for his position as councillor from 1983 – 87 and 1999 – present time.
Cr Steel said during his time in local government at Kiama he had worked under four mayors and 10 deputy mayors.
“As a councillor you are involved and you feel like you can do something for the community, you get in there and make decisions,” he said.
“I feel like I’ve been able to make a contribution to the town.
“I was very proud to get the award – it was a thrill.”
Cr Steel has lived in the municipality for 37 years and have seven grandchildren who also reside in the area.
“I’m very proud of Kiama, and I think over the years the councils I have been on have achieved a great deal,” he said.
“30 plus years ago I went on council for three years and swore I would never do it again, then I was off for two years before going back and I’ve been there ever since.
“I’ve made a lot of friends on both sides of the fence, I’m very much an independent, I want to make my own decisions and I say what I think.”
Mayor Mark Honey commended Cr Steel on the honour.
“Councillor Steel received the award for 22 years service in local government, very few people have achieved that level of service – congratulations Warren,” Cr Honey said.
