I was a high school mathematics teacher for 38 years. I finished as head teacher mathematics at Illawarra Sports High after periods of time at Kiama High School and several schools in the Illawarra and Sydney.
Where do you live?
I live in Kiama Downs with my wife, Karon. We have lived here for the nearly 34-years and have two children who grew up in the local area before moving away. Ali lives in the USA with our 18-month-old granddaughter, Reagan and Matt lives in Wollongong.
Where is your hometown?
I’m a proud “Westie” having grown up in the Western Suburbs of Sydney at Cabramatta.
How does Kiama differ from your hometown?
The obvious difference is the beautiful scenery that combined with a more relaxed way of life makes Kiama such a great place to bring up a family.
Although Kiama is less multi-cultural than Cabramatta it still has its own unique character and its close proximity to Sydney allows us to combine the best of country living with the facilities that a big city provides.
What are your hobbies or what do you do in your spare time?
My main interests are travelling, sport and volunteering. I love organising and being involved in major events, so I spend most of my time travelling overseas, usually incorporating sometime in the US to visit my daughter and family and watching a sporting event.
My duties as president of Kiama Cavaliers Cricket Club, secretary of Kiama District Sports Association, volunteer driver with Blue Haven Care and presiding officer for the HSC Examinations at Kiama High occupy a lot of my spare time, but I try to play golf every Thursday.
In 2015, I volunteered at three major events. I was the assistant manager of the Sydney Transport Office for the Cricket World Cup; I then drove the Diamonds to the grand final of the Netball World Cup and finished the year off by driving the players and officials at the Australian Golf Open.
What are some fun facts people don’t know about you?
I don’t know if anyone would think these are funny, but three things that I remember from my childhood are:
- Playing cricket at Keira Oval on the day Prime Minister Harold Holt disappeared. It sticks in my memory for the fact I caught behind future test cricketer, Ian Davis, for a duck.
- Playing schoolboy golf against Jack Newton, when he had two arms and dominated junior golf.
- Running on the Sydney Cricket Ground in the 100m at the NSW CHS Athletics Championships.
What is your favourite thing about the area?
Without doubt the Minnamurra River. I have travelled to many amazing places in the world and am sure there is not many better than “The River”.
My wife and I love taking our kayaks to the river and paddling over to the spit and camping on the shore.
What is your favourite holiday destination?
Although I love coming home my favourite places, for a variety of reasons, would be the Greek Islands, Granada in southern Spain, Bavaria in southern Germany and Fiji.
I also love the unique character of the US cities of San Francisco, New York, New Orleans and San Diego.
