Educators shared their techniques and technologies at the 2016 MoodleMoot Australia Conference in Perth from September 27-29.
Presenter and TAFE NSW Illawarra building and construction teacher Brett McCroary is knowledgeable regarding using online tradie tools including Point-of-view goggles, Go Pros, iPads, YouTube and Moodle.
Gerringong resident Mr McCroary joined the roster of speakers at the conference, which included Moodle founder and CEO Martin Dougiamas and STEAM innovator, Melissa Silk.
The three-day event was designed to help educators improve their teaching practices with online learning software tools.
Mr McCroary is enthusiastic about using innovative technologies for those future builders enrolled in the Certificate IV in Building Studies.
This increasingly diverse way of delivery aims to provide students with the flexibility to learn at home, on bad weather work days and even on holidays.
“The students are now able to study at regional locations including Cooma, Moruya, Goulburn and Nowra which saves them travel time and money, and increases the likelihood of students completing the course,” he said.
“It’s all about putting the student at the centre of their learning experience.
“We’ve been able to increase our students by 400 per cent since 2014 and the number of students completing has almost doubled in this time as well.”
Having played a significant role in developing TAFE Illawarra’s first-ever online Certificate IV in Building and Construction course, Mr McCroary was approached by the conference organisers to present on developing online trades training courses.
“Understanding the schedule of a builder, I saw an opportunity to evolve our traditional two-year face-to-face course into something that gives people a choice to study when and where they want,” he said.
