Following a successful exhibition in Spain, Kiama artist Machteld Hali is opening her gallery to showcase the beautiful range of prints.

Machteld was invited to show her work at the 10th International Printmaking Symposium in Santandar, Spain, in September.
Her theme was 'Camino', as she has walked sections of famous trail Camino de Santiago de Compostella over the last three years, and was moved by the more than just physical aspects of the experience.
“It was a great honour to be chosen,” she said.
Machteld said the highlight of the trip and exhibition was revisiting the places she had depicted in her work and then seeing them again through the eyes of the work.
“Coming to an exhibition is of course a different experience for everyone,” she said.
“This is my heart and soul on the paper, what I experience and how and why I react to it. I am giving it to you, to observe, as you wish. I hope it will touch you in some way.”
For those who know Hali's work, it is usually very colourful and this conversely, is shades of sepia.
Shane Gardner was Machteld’s walking partner for a large part of the journey, and will also be showing his photographs from the walk.
Shane, having grown up in rural Queensland, has a love for and identifies with anything rural, landscape, farming and architectural.
With his passion for natural beauty and light, he works at capturing and portraying creative imagery through the lens. In most cases the image requires little to no embellishment. The quality in the work has been achieved by "being there at the right moment in time".
One of Machteld’s prints will be auctioned at the launch event, with the proceeds going to the Aboriginal Scholarship Fund in Moree that the pair initiated.
The fund grew out of Machteld's return Freedom Ride in 2015 to commemorate the original ride with Charlie Perkins in 1965, of which she was a part of.
“The welcome they had in Moree the second time was very different from the first, when we were pelted with eggs and rotten tomatoes,” she said.
Thus, together with Shane, she started a fund by doing printmaking workshops and selling the prints to raise enough money to send an Aboriginal student to Sydney College of the Arts, to complete an art degree and return to Moree as an art teacher.
The exhibition will be officially opened by artist Tori de Mestre on Friday, November 9 at 6pm.
“Everyone is welcome to the opening where Spanish pinxtos (delicious little snacks on skewers) and Sangria will be plentiful!”
An exhibition of images along ‘The Way’ – photographs by Shane Gardner and prints by Machteld Halie, will be on show at The Tempest Gallery, 21 Holden Avenue, Kiama from November 10-23.

CHILDRENS’ ART CLASSES: Machteld also teaches children after school art, including clay work, drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking and collage, Wednesdays 3.30-4.30pm.
PRINTMAKING WORKSHOP: ‘Water, Water, Everywhere’ collagraph printmaking workshop will be held on November 24-25, from 9am-4pm. Students will learn the collograph using the ‘wipes’ colouring method. The workshop will explore the imagery suggesting many forms of water; the sea, snow, rivers, rain, clouds, ice, glaciers and tears.
