Local Rotary Clubs celebrated 90 years of continuous “Service Above Self” in the Illawarra at a commemorative dinner held in Wollongong last week. The Rotary Club of Wollongong was the fifth Rotary Club chartered in Australia and helped establish the Rotary Club of Kiama in 1952.
There are currently 10 Rotary Clubs in the Illawarra Region with over 300 active members. These clubs regularly contribute to the local and international communities. In 2016-2017 alone, the clubs raised almost $500,000 through various grants and fundraising activities.
Members and friends of local clubs, 6 Past District Governors and many VIPs attended the gala event.
Meanwhile, the Rotary Clubs of Kiama and Gerringong are preparing to run the annual Kiama Car and Bike Spectacular at Kiama Showground from 9:00am to 2:30pm on Sunday 12 November in support of melanoma research.
This family fun day will include all things automotive plus many activities for the whole family. Free skin care checks will also be available onsite. Entry is a $5 donation per person (under 12 years free).
KIAMA LIONS
Last week at the Carers cottage project we had a major clean up of the site. We filled a large truck with over full 2 loads of general rubbish which was threatening to become a safety hazard.
A great big Thank You to the lovely Nicole from South Coast Gardens and Trees who provided the truck and took it to the tip for us. We also purchased the new wide front door capable of taking wheelchairs, thanks to United Mitre 10.
We will be hosting the annual lunch for the visually impaired, we call it the VIP lunch and we provide and serve the food and others provide the entertainment. It is a much appreciated event.
We are now approaching that time of year when we host our Lions Youth of the Year event. This is where we challenge young folk to show us their public speaking skills on a variety of subjects. Our local winner goes off and competes at District Level, then State and Nationwide, with great prizes to be won at every level.
Our next dinner meeting will be at the Leagues Club on November 14 and we expect to induct a new member that night.
