A number of elite swimmers from Kiama have taken part in Dapto’s Qualifying Carnival on Sunday, among them Layke Shipley.

The 10-year-old is a top swimmers for his age in Kiama and put in an outstanding performance in the pool over the weekend.
Up against some of the best swimmers in the South Eastern swimming region, the Kiama Downs junior athlete was a formidable competitor in all events.
His results were as follows:
- 1st – 100 metre backstroke.
- 1st – 50 metre breastroke.
- 1st – 50 metre freestyle.
- 1st – 100 metre freestyle.
- 1st – 50 metre backstroke.
- 2nd – 200 metre individual medley.
- 2nd – 100 metre breastroke.
“Layke is very happy with his efforts and always pushes himself to do his best in the pool,” Layke’s mother Casey Shipley said.
Layke also competes for the Kiama Downs SLSC and along with his team mate Ivy Miller, is preparing to take part in the Sydney Water Surf Series, when round 2 comes to Kiama Downs for the first time on Saturday, November 4.
“Ivy Miller is exceptional in the open water swims as is Layke at the various surf carnivals in the Illawarra and South Coast,” Mrs Shipley said.
“Their dedication to their sport and training is incredible.
“They just are going from strength to strength in the water events and are growing in confidence more and more each day.”
Kyah Shipley, 9, is also following closely behind her big brother in the pool.
“She is certainly one to watch for sure and is showing promise at many development carnivals throughout the South Coast region,” Mrs Shipley said.
