They will be the first members to represent the club at this level of competition.
Members in the representative team include Manuel Gutierrez (captain), Glenda Gutierrez, Eilis Golightly, Graham Shephard, Gai Bathe and Evan Bathe.
Gateball is one of three mallet sport codes that are played at the Jamberoo club and is the most recent code to arrive at the club – the others being golf croquet and association croquet.
The Australian Gateball Championships are held biannually and attracts international interest. As well as 18 Australian teams, players will be joining the event from China, Indonesia, Korea, Germany and Paraguay.
Top performers at the event will earn themselves the right to play in the 2018 World Gateball Union Championships to be held in Sao Paulo Brazil.
What is Gateball?
Gateball is a fast playing modified version of croquet with a Japanese origin and although a relatively small sport in Australia, there is 10 million players in China.
The game involves hitting balls through three gates and then onto a goal pole. Teams alternately play red balls numbered one, three, five, seven and nine, white numbered two, four, six, eight and 10.
Gateball has been described as being combination of chess and snooker strategies played out on a lawn.
