The state government’s annual beaches scorecard, released on Monday, saw every one of the region’s 21 swimming spots rated as being good or very good.
The ratings were similar to the previous year – despite periods of prolonged wet weather and significant storm events during the 2016-17 reporting period.
Stanwell Park, Coledale, Austinmer, Woonona, Coniston, Wollongong City and Fishermans beaches were named the best in the Wollongong City Council area.

The Illawarra State of the Beaches 2016–2017 report said there had been “significant improvements in water quality” at Fishermans beach since 2006, when the Port Kembla sewage treatment plant was decommissioned.
Warilla and Shellharbour beaches were the Shellharbour area’s best spots. In Kiama, Jones and Bombo beaches saw improvements.
