IAS Rugby 7’s Athlete Abby Holmes took out the 2017 IAS Rugby 7’s athlete of the year as well as the prestigious Illawarra Mercury Tobin Family Award.
Holmes narrowly edged out a number of her sporting peers to claim the IAS top award and with it the $5000 sports scholarship courtesy of the Illawarra Mercury.
The IAS 2017 scholarship year concluded in style on Friday evening with the presentation dinner and athlete graduation, where 180 athletes across more than 20 sports graduated in the company of family and friends at the Novotel Wollongong Northbeach.
Among the guests were Australian sporting representatives past and present including 2012 Olympians Kieran Govers and Brendan Sexton, as well as dignitaries from local government along with the NSW Government, Mr Andrew Putt, Director of Sector Performance for the Office of Sport, representing the NSW Sports Minister the Hon. Stuart Ayres, MP.
Master of Ceremonies and WIN News Sports Reporter Jared Constable kept the evening flowing while guest speakers and IAS Graduate Kieran Govers provided an insight into what it takes to compete at the pinnacle of sport.
Sport awards were presented to the 'sports athlete of the year' for each sports program. These included:
- Disabled Athlete of the Year – Jasmine Greenwood
- Basketball Athlete of the Year – Noah Martin
- Cycling Athlete of the Year – Mitchell Wright
- Golf Athlete of the year – Kelsey Bennett
- Hockey Athlete of the Year – Tom David
- LoneStar Athlete of the Year – Keiran Woolley
- Netball Athlete of the Year – Bilyana Milevski
- Rugby Union Athlete of the Year – Abby Holmes
- Triathlon Athlete of the Year – Brooklyn Henry
- Tenpin Bowling Athlete of the Year – Zowie Dreghorn
The IAS Presentation Night was also an opportunity to recognise and thank the many IAS sponsors and partners for their continued support that enables the academy to provide levy free scholarships to talented young people from across the region in their pursuit of sporting excellence.
