In front of a packed crowd on Sunday, the game started with plenty of venom, as both sides tried to assert their dominance.
Fans didn’t have to wait long for the match’s opening points, as star centre Jake Clarke opened the account for the Superoos.
Forward Corey Grigg charged down a Matt Carroll kick, which appeared to be covered by Sharks fullback Jason Gray, but the bounce of the ball deceived Gray and ended in the hands of Clarke – who easily planted the ball down.
Dean Watling added the extras and the host led 6-nil.
The lead was short-lived when Sharks five-eighth Brock Skelly produced a pin-point cross field kick for winger Jamie Manukonga to pluck out of the air and score.
Carroll converted for 6-all after 10 minutes.
Watling nearly restored the Roos advantage six minutes after when he caught a Josh Kent kick but in attempting to ground the ball, he lost control of it.
The winger didn’t have to wait long to rectify his mistake, scoring the hosts second try four minutes later.
Off a scrum, quick footwork and hands by Kent and Trent Ryan allowed Watling to stroll over and score.
Watling converted from the sideline for 12-6.
Three minutes later, the Sharks were unlucky not to equalise once again.
Half Carroll sliced through the line, following a show and go, but in attempting to place the ball down, referee Karra-Lee Nolan ruled that he lost possession – keeping the hosts six-point lead in tact.
With just over 10 minutes to go in the half, the Roos had their third when interchange forward Jack Loveday ran off the hip off hooker James Asquith.
Asquith, who had earlier in the set earned his team a penalty by catching the defenders offside, used a slight of hand to put Loveday over next to the sticks.
Watling converted for 18-6.
Right on the stroke of half-time, the wind was completely taken out of the Sharks’ sails, when Loveday crashed over for his second in the space of 10 minutes.
Watling converted for 24-6 at the break.
The Sharks knew they had to be first to score in the second half, if they were any chance of coming back into the match.
The half’s first real chance fell to the visitors when Kane Chapman made a strong run, only yo be caught just short of the line, thanks largely to strong defence from the Roos.
Five minutes later, the Sharks again looked certain to score when Carroll broke the line.
But with Mark Asquith between him and the line, Carroll attempted to pass to winger Manukonga but it was intercepted by Watling – putting an end to that attacking raid.
With 20 minutes to go, Watling landed a penalty kick, after the Sharks were found offside while defending their own line – stretching the lead to 20 points.
The very next set, Jamberoo’s Ben Wade burst through a hole before the ball was sent out to centre Ryan – who was somehow prevented from scoring.
But the next play, the ball was spread from the right to the left and Jamberoo’s other centre Clarke barged his way over to score his second of the afternoon.
Watling continued his perfect day with the boot, making it 32-6.
With 11 to go, the Sharks were again denied when Watling produced a try-saver on Manukonga, by taking him dead before his opposite number was able to score the ball.
The Roos’ resistance was finally ended with four minutes to go, when Carroll scored his team’s second – the half again broke through before reaching over the score despite pressure from Mark Asquith.
Carroll missed on a chance to convert his own try, making it 32-10.
In the final minute, Watling landed another penalty goal – for a perfect 7/7 for the match, to make it 34-10 at full-time.
In the win, the Roos were best served by Watling, Loveday, Aaron Grigg and halves Jono Dallas and Josh Kent, while Carroll, Dylan McGregor and Ryan McCracken never stopped trying for the Sharks.
The Superoos will now look to win their first premiership in the top grade since 1974, where they defeated Albion Park-Oak Flats at the Kiama Showground, while the Sharks will battle the Kiama Knights at Cec Glenholmes Oval for place in the decider.
