We are happy to hear that the latest shipping container of school furniture and books, woollen goods for the highland people and equipment for the new TB ward of the hospital has arrived safely in Madang, PNG. This container, one of several over the past few years, was organised and sent by Kiama Rotary to the Rotary Club of Madang which we continue to support as one of our close regional relationships.
Rotary member Ian Johnston has sent an enthusiastic update on the Rotary Vocational Training Team of Emergency Services in Vanuatu which has just begun in Port Vila.
The joint training program involving six local agencies and up to 60 personnel will foster inter-agency cooperation and skills development towards best practice disaster response for professional staff and volunteers.
Two local General Practitioners donated their time last Saturday at Gerringong to provide free screening for melanoma as a Rotary community service which was funded by a private donation. Nineteen checks were carried out on the day with 10 follow-up referrals made.
KIAMA LIONS
September is going to be a very busy month for Kiama Lions. We start this week by dismantling all the stands of the Art Show at the Leagues Club, then on the 10th we will have our BBQ for the Romans Hot Rod Show at Black Beach.
On the 17th we have our usual market caravan, last month we almost ran out of hot drinks as it was so cold to start the day.
Finally on Saturday the 23rd it will be our turn to run the BBQ for the Second Hand Saturday, so we will be "all hands to the pump".
Last month on the market Sunday we also helped Kiama Public School run their fund-raising BBQ which turned out to be a very successful collaboration between ourselves and the parents of the schoolchildren.
However, it is not all hard work, Our last dinner meeting was a guided tour of the HARS facility at Albion Park which proved very popular.
This month on the 14th we will be having our meeting at the Olive and Vine with partners and invited friends.
