Previously Kiama residents were given until the end of August to drop off their old seats at the Community Recycling Centre in Minnamurra.
“This is an environmentally sustainable way to dispose of your old child car restraints and seats, which typically contain 90 per cent recyclable material,” waste management officer Josephine St John said.
“It is estimated that over 200,000 child car seats are being disposed of by families every year, with the majority being sent to landfill.”
Child car safety seats accepted for recycling are:
• Rear facing carriers
• Forward facing seats
• Booster seats
• Car seat and carrier frames
• Car seat and carrier strapping
• Items that attach directly to the seat or carrier supported by the manufacturer
Kiama is one of three NSW sites taking part in the trial, which is being conducted by Equilibrium in conjunction with the Flagstaff Group, NSW Government, NRMA and child safety seat manufacturers.
The aim is to divert in excess of 900 tonnes of waste away from landfill and back into the recycling stream.
Another aim is to remove potentially unsafe child car safety seats from the reuse market.
Results of the trial will be used to determine the viability of the service.
