The Boomerang Bags group will set up a pop-up shop opposite Woolworths, demonstrating how to make Boomerang Bags and recruiting volunteers.
Organiser Camilla Kerr-Ruston said the announcements by Woolworths, Coles and IGA that they were ceasing single use plastic shopping bags on July 1, 2018 had increased interest in Boomerang Bags.
“We’ve had great success with shoppers and stallholders at the Kiama Farmers Market”, Mrs Kerr-Ruston said.
“But the announcements by Coles, Woolworths and IGA has seen a flood of enquiries about alternatives to single use plastic bags.”
“We are setting ourselves up at Kiama Village shopping centre to show the community how Boomerang Bags work.”
Mrs Kerr-Ruston said while the group was always keen to sign up volunteers, they were also keen to support other Boomerang Bag Groups forming throughout the area.
“The Boomerang Bag model has been successfully implemented by over 250 groups around Australia, anyone interested in setting up a new group in their area can come and see us for help.”
Boomerang Bags are made bags from recycled donated materials, such as bed sheets, doona covers, unwanted fabric and curtains.
Currently bags are available for shoppers, who forget their own bags, at the Kiama Farmers Market, which recently went plastic bag and polystyrene free.
Kiama Council is supporting Kiama Boomerang Bags as part of the Regional Waste Strategy.
