On August 14-15, Kiama Rotary, as part of the Mental Health Intervention Project, in collaboration with Kiama High School, conducted the first of the Youth Mental Health First Aid Programs at the Kiama Pavilion for teachers, counsellors and youth workers. The training package built upon the existing mental health literacy programs already part the high school curriculum.
The participants developed their skills to recognise and respond early and effectively to a young person who may be developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis, and refer them appropriately. A course for the teens themselves will follow in a few weeks.
Kiama Rotary members attended the opening of the SENTRAL youth services building renovations in Hindmarsh Park. The facility, a service of Kiama Council, provides information and referrals to about 3000 young people each year between 12-24 years of age throughout the Local Government Area. Trained Youth Workers provide assistance on a wide range of youth related issues for young people who are studying, working or living locally.
KIAMA LIONS
When did you last enjoy a fabulous multi-course banquet at a restaurant knowing that every cent you paid was going to a designated charity? That was exactly what recently happened when members of Kiama and Minnamurra Lions clubs, together with parents from Kiama Public School P&C, enjoyed a sumptuous Asian banquet at a special charity night at Kiama's Kai Restaurant.
This was the ninth such occasion since 2009 that Kai's owners, Le and Mark, have hosted a function organised by Kiama Lions at one of their restaurants, with all the proceeds going to a number of very worthwhile causes over the years. In response to Kiama Lions Club President Rob McKinnon announcing that the night would generate $2050 for Kiama PS P&C , its President Martin Walker observed that this would be put to good use to benefit students at the school.
We hope that service-minded parents supporting a school's P&C efforts will be a part of the future membership of community service clubs such as Lions and Rotary.
